National Honor Society

The American School of Durango has taken on the mission of educating students to become model citizens. The National Honor Society & National Junior Honor Society consists of a select group of leaders, of truly exceptional people, of above average winners. These students don’t only exceed academically, but are also comprised of values and integrity. The National Honor Society makes sure to include these exceptional students who demonstrate qualities of dedication, loyalty, and compassion towards others. NHS/NJHS students are natural leaders who aren’t afraid to step up and show what they are made of.

In the words of John C. Maxwell:
A leader is the one, who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way”

Members of The National Honor Society & National Junior Honor Society are nothing less than exemplary students, and mediocrity won’t be found amongst our ranks. Students working on social community activities offer clothes, comfort and basic resources to help others in need. These leaders are characterized by their character and we do not base our self-worth from words, but by our actions. A true act of integrity is meant to inspire others to join and follow our vision and in doing so, shows what a leader is capable of.

Some of the activities NHS/NJHS has planned for this year include weekly visits to the Cancerology Clinic, the Casa de las Lunas Senior Center, the LIYAME foundation, which help to improve our community. NHS/NJHS intends to plan out a brighter future and take the actions necessary to see this vision come true. Will you be a leader too?

NHS/NJHS decided to participate in the socktober campaign, and managed to collect warm underwear & socks for South American migrants. These items of clothing were gathered in the span of a month, and were given to the National Migration Institute, received by delegate Luis Enrique Perez Mota. Hurray!

The entire school makes sure to donate bottle caps to our Bottle Cap drive. We then sell these caps to the recycling center in order to gather funds for kids’ cancer treatments. Sweet!

At the En Busca de un sueño program, less privileged kids are granted an education and an opportunity to become an amazing and functioning generation thanks to the generous director, Prof. Daniel Cisneros. We aid them with books, supplies, and any way we can to support them. This partnership has lasted several years, and the ASD is happy to see it flourish today. Nice!

We motivate students to visit people reviving cancer during our weekly visits to the Centro Estatal de Cancerología, we make sure to spend time with cancer patients there. We love to meet & talk to them and brighten their day. It’s quite fun to make new friends there, being there for them, and giving patients water bottles and cards in order to make them feel better.

(Every Friday from 7:30 am to 9:00 am)

We make sure to visit FUNDACIÓN LIYAME and meet new friends there. LIYAME is an institution that provides support to people with physical or mental disabilities and their families in conditions of vulnerability with a comprehensive education system. We take care of children responsibly while their parents are busy. We listen to the stories that these children have to tell and make sure we spend time with them.

(Every Wednesday from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm)

La Casa de las Lunas Senior center specializes in providing the residents with special, personal care. NHS/NJHS members make sure to spend time with some of these residents and try to make them have a great time and make them feel in company make their day a bit brighter with stories, singing, and dancing.

(Every Friday from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm)

NHS/NJHS also makes sure to collect recyclables, as we believe not only in the well being of our community, but our planet as well. Many classes have been implemented with recycling bins, taking us a step further to a greener Earth. We meet every Friday after school, organized in groups to be more efficient.

(Every Friday at 2:30 pm)

NHS/NJHS students make sure to share warmth and compassion during the coldest months of the year, to those in need. We get students to donate blankets, socks, and winter clothes. Then we collect them and give them to the neediest.

We know how difficult school can be! That is why we visit our elementary students several times a week. Our goal is to help children with their homework and projects and have fun in the process! We increase the relationship between the biggest and the smallest.

(Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2:45 pm to 3:15 pm and every Wednesday from 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm)

New faces, new friends. This year we started going to Casa Hogar de Niños de Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia, an orphanage founded by DIF. We seek to create links with children and adolescents with different activities. We help children develop new skills and talents, through mentoring different cultural and themes.

(Every Monday from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm)
